As many of you know, I had a minor setback to summer last week when I had surgery on my ankle.  Last December I broke the posterior malleolus bone and detached all the lateral ligaments.  It didn't heal on its own, but thanks to Western medicine, I am put back together.  I have had a lot of questions about my return to the spa.  I am already back in the office and will start seeing clients again tomorrow (July 2nd).  I am blocking out more time for each appointment for the month of July to account for me moving a little slower, but other than that it will be business as usual.  Thank you again for all your sweet Instagram, Facebook and text messages.  I truly feel loved and cared for!

XXO,

We all know the usual health implications of a diet high in sugar.  Diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity, to name a few.  But did you know that eating large amounts of sugar can also make you age prematurely?  When we consume sugar, our pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that pushes sugar from the bloodstream into a cell to be used for energy.  This process triggers chronic and low-grade inflammation, which over time leads to glycation.

When glucose (in the form of carbohydrates and sugar) enters our bloodstream, it attaches to a protein molecule.  This includes the protein molecule, collagen, which provides structure to the skin.  A new molecule is then formed, called an advanced glycation end product. These molecules break down collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin elasticity. The collagen and elastin become stiffer and less functional, which leads to sagging skin, wrinkles and an older appearance.

This isn't to say you should never eat sugar, but it should be consumed in small amounts and infrequently. Not only are there zero nutritional benefits from the pretty white stuff, but it wreaks havoc on your health. And face.
We are very excited to welcome Erin O'Sullivan to the Refined team.  She joins us as our new receptionist/office assistant.

Erin recently moved to Sandpoint from Denver, but her roots are on the East Coast.  She has spent the last 10 years working in the salon/spa world and will be a great asset to our office. We are so happy to have you Erin!
