Summer is in full swing and we couldn't be happier about it!  Between beach days & BBQ's we are all bound to get our share of outdoor time, and with that comes sun exposure.  I know we talk about it a lot at the spa, but it is worth repeating... unprotected sun exposure is the #1 cause of premature aging and skin cancer.  So, below we address some common myths about sunscreen to help you better protect yourself and your family.  Stay sun safe this summer!

XXO,

Bri

A lot of you have messaged me asking about the One Love Organics Botanical B cleansing oil solid!  Good news, we have it in stock!  We love oil cleansing, and the oil solid makes it easy to travel with (no leaking skincare product in your luggage).

Oil cleansing is great for those with drier skin, and if you are on the opposite end of the spectrum (oil city), we recommend oil cleansing as your first wash to break up sunscreen, makeup and pollution, and then using your normal cleanser for your second cleanse.  You will be left with perfectly clean skin that glows.

Common sunscreen myths!

Myth: Every sunscreen works the same way, so it doesn't matter what formula you use.

Fact: Chemical sunscreens (avobenzone, oxybenzone, etc.) work by absorbing damaging rays; physical sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) reflect the rays.  Some sunscreens combine both physical and chemical ingredients for more complete protection.

Myth: You should apply sunscreen the moment you hit the beach.

Fact: You're getting sun exposure as soon as you walk outside. If you're using a chemical sunscreen you need to apply about 30 minutes before leaving the house to give the skin time to absorb it. If you're using a physical sunscreen it protects you immediately with application.

Myth: All sunscreen is effective against damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Fact: Only sunscreens labeled broad-spectrum protect against both types.  Though UVB rays are the ones that give you a sunburn, UVA causes skin aging, and both can increase your risk for skin cancer.  Always choose a sunscreen labeled broad-spectrum.

Myth: You can get sunburned through a car window.

Fact: Glass effectively blocks UVB rays, so you won't burn, but you still need sunscreen to protect against UVA damage (remember, this is the one that contributes to skin aging).

Myth: SPF 100 is twice as effective as SPF 50.

Fact: SPF 50 screens 98% of rays.  SPF 100 screens 99%, so the advantage is minimal.  In either case, don't let the high SPF lull you into a false sense of security about exposure. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 minutes and reapply every 2-3 hours.
